Committee of the Whole
The Senate meeting was taken into Committee of the Whole by Speaker-elect Bierman.
Speaker-elect Bierman announced that there will be a Jazz Night in April at the University Club sponsored by the Faculty Senate.
Speaker-elect Bierman discussed the plans for the Joint meeting between the TAMU Faculty Senate and the UT Faculty Council. The meeting is on March 2, and will be held at the Association of Former Students Clayton Williams Building. All Senators are requested to attend as much of the meeting as possible; RSVP requests are forthcoming. The theme of the meeting is Climate and Diversity on Campus.
Senator Magill from COALS asked why honorary degrees are not awarded at the branch campus. It was explained by Provost Watson that the University is the degree granting authority, and the branch campuses are part of that, and they are not separate degree granting institutes.
Provost Watson asked the Faculty Senate to take the lead in faculty discussions about course redundancies at the University.
A Senator inquired as to the criteria for the 42 hours of core curriculum courses. Provost Watson gave an explanation of the categories, and noted that all courses must fall into one of the categories, and there is no longer an “other” category.
Senator Jimenez said that there seems to be a general dissatisfaction about the resource allocation to handle growth. He stated that he had heard from faculty in the College of Science and elsewhere that resources aren’t growing with the enrollment. Provost Watson explained the funding mechanisms and noted that the College of Science was given money up front to address the growth in enrollment in Engineering. She also stated that the enrollment had not gone up this year compared to last year.
Speaker-elect Bierman returned the meeting to Speaker Strawser, who led the Senate in a closed session.
