Speaker Comments
The speaker introduced Diane Bertinetti as the new Assistant to the Senate and thanked Lena Koestler for her valuable assistance over the interim period.
Planning for the joint UT Faculty Council, TAMU Faculty Senate meeting which will be in March in Austin this year is underway. Senators will be asked to submit topics of interest to be included in the agenda.
The two groups are also making arrangements to meet jointly with key legislators to address issues in higher education, especially as related to our Flagship Universities.
The Executive Committee along with the Legislative Affairs Committee, is planning to meet with our local state legislators before the session begins in January.
The search committee to identify the next Vice President for Research has met to work on defining the position description and is soliciting nominations and applications.
Chancellor Sharp will address the Senate in January and Regent Mendoza will be the February guest speaker.
Dr. Miguel Mora, (WFS) was sworn in as a Senator for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to replace Dr. Martyn Gun who left the University.

Item J. Discussion centered on why the degree called for exclusion of Math 167, an approved core curriculum course, to satisfy the 3 hours of math required by the degree. The Political Sciences Department prefers that student take Math 141 and 142 to prepare for advanced level work in the major, but did not indicate the need to take those courses in the degree plan. The corrected change will be re-presented in the January Senate meeting.

The change in student rules (Attachment Y) that deals with removal of students with below required academic standards was approved. It includes agreed-upon editing made with the aid of Senator Hill following points raised in discussion in the November meeting.

Attachment Z
Jim Kracht spoke on behalf of the 2 student rule changes described in Appendix Z that deal with standardizing wording for students seeking dual majors or a second degrees (rule 14) and assuring that students with an honors violation are not able to graduate with honors (rule 15). Voting on the proposed changes will be held in January.

Committee of the Whole: Senator Varner requested (again) that a method be devised to allow Senators to preview requests for consideration for Honorary Degrees in a secure on-line setting. It is virtually impossible to go over the dossiers in the Senate setting, and the Senators from Galveston and Qatar are excluded from the hand-out versions.
