Committee of the Whole
The meeting then was turned over to Speaker-elect Jim Woosley for the Committee of the Whole.
Senator Angie Hill Price of Engineering announced that in the last meeting of the Transportation Committee there was a discussion of ways to finance the proposed Kyle Field parking garage without the campus wide community fielding the full cost. She asked senators to let her know if they have a concern about the construction of that facility if there is not a price tag attached to it.
Senator Richard Carlson of Geosciences noted there have been numerous conversations about the lack of shared governance on campus. However, he said, he looked at Faculty Senate minutes for last year and a half or two years and found a pattern: The Senate had a speaker, harassed the speaker, approved the consent agenda, had the Committee of the Whole and then went home. He suggested there was a need to be more proactive, including hearing reports from committees. He urged the body to anticipate things and be proactive.
Senator Mike Greenwald of Liberal Arts said that bicycle safety on campus is a huge issue and he hopes there is a way to have lanes that separate bike traffic from pedestrian traffic. “We’re not taking enough steps to make sure we have safe lanes,” he said.
Provost Karan Watson reminded the Senate that SACS is coming again for a completely new review of Texas A&M University and will be visiting various sites in late February. The Faculty Senate, she said, will be engaged as the faculty voice during the accreditation process. The merger with the Health Sciences Center and the acquisition of the law school have prompted the review to ensure that “we’re one university,” Watson said. Noting that the university is still working on some issues to get the merger done right, she said, “We’re making progress and have a timeline to get everything resolved.”
Watson also noted that the new interim president – Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Mark Hussey – would take over at midnight that night. She said he is asking what are the three things each unit needs to accomplish this year and why and what are the three things each needs to be doing to help move toward Vision 2020. “He believes these are things we ought to be talking about,” she said.
Senator Ira Greenbaum of Science stressed the need to quickly bring the Senate Constitution into compliance with the expanded Senate and the inclusion of representatives from the HSC and law school.
Senator Beth Tebeaux of Liberal Arts raised questions about student evaluation process. The provost responded that the complexity of the IDEA tool didn’t get us far enough into a better process. “We probably should be doing a better job of what we collect and how we use it, but the faculty should be driving that,” Watson said.
Adjourn
The meeting was turned back over to Speaker Daugherity and adjourned at 3:49 p.m.
