SPEAKER COMMENTS
Colleagues were in the 3rd month of our grand experience of the way we conduct business as the pandemic recedes, and we examine what we’ve learned during the past two years. So far meeting remote and our online business meetings have continued to produce excellent attendance and active participation. Our efforts to provide in-person opportunities have met with initial success in my view. We had a robust reception for new members last month at the A&M Hotel and Conference Center, and I heard from many of you that you enjoyed the event and look forward to more. The first two monthly coffee hours, although relatively small in attendance resulted in important sharing of information that helped us quickly assist some faculty members who were experiencing difficulties. Our next senate coffee hour scheduled for this Friday from eight to nine thirty a.m. in the Great Hall of the YMCA Building. It is informal and we invite senators to stop by even if you can only make it for a few minutes to join in discussion.
The one issue that gets raised repeatedly is the mental health of our students in our continuing efforts to find ways to address the problem. Several members of the Executive Committee at the invitation of Nancy Fahrenwald, the former Dean of Nursing and New Associate Vice President for University Health Services will be meeting with her and members of the counseling services team to brainstorm ways to help faculty work with students confronting challenges. If you have suggestions or questions you would like to see us address, please email me or stop by the coffee hour on Friday
Finally, with Covid flu and RSV active in the area and other parts of Texas, I hope everyone has a safe and healthy Thanksgiving break and wrap up to the semester.
