Faculty Senate Meeting Agenda April 9, 2018

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 3:20 pm.
 

Guest Speakers

 

Jerry Strawser, Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations and Chief Financial Officer, and Timothy Lomax, Texas A&M Transportation Institute Research Fellow and Mobility Specialist, addressed the senate regarding plans for our first Thursday night football game which will take place the first week of school in the fall 2018 semester. Dr. Strawser is chairing the Football Game Committee to ensure a smooth day for classes and the game. The primary message is that we are NOT cancelling classes. We want class and we want fans on campus that day.
 
Important to note is that 12th Man parking will not begin until after 4:30 pm on that game day. Non-essential personnel will be released at 12:30 to help clear parts of campus. A more detailed timeline, website, apps, maps, and other information are in the works and will be released later.
 

Speaker Comments

Dr. Hill Price addressed the senate about some ballot issues in some colleges related to rules not being enforced in the past. She reminded the senate that we will be following the rules outlined in our bylaws.
 
Dr. Hill Price also apologized for the issues we experienced with the April 9 agenda crashing and faculty being unable to view any attachments to minutes, courses, rules, etc. The new format isn’t working so we will go back to the way we have done it previously to ensure adequate access.

Committee Reports
 

Academic Affairs Committee

John Stallone, Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, reported that a full report of the Academic Afffairs committee will be provided at the May 14 Senate meeting.

Core Curriculum Committee

Andrew Klein, Chair of the Core Curriculum Council, described the current work of the Core Curriculum Committee in reviewing and approving International and Cultural Diversity and new Cultural Discourse courses. Proposals for these courses are due in May and the committee will be working to review and approve for implementation in the fall 2019 catalog.

Personnel & Welfare Committee

Jose Fernandez Solis, Chair of the Personnel and Welfare Committee, discussed the committee’s work on the annual review process and grievances. He reported that the process can be grieved, but the outcome cannot be grieved. The committee wants to ensure that a fair process exists for all faculty, whether tenure track or academic professional track. They are continuing to collect information related to processes at our peer institutions.

Research Committee

Rob Hetland, Chair of the Research Committee, discussed the Open Access Policy they have developed. This policy will be shared via email with the senate for feedback and consideration for approval.
 

Closed Session

The senate went into closed session to consider honorary degree recipients.
